Personal work: Sfax bus stops
Le Projet Sfax - EU Delegation's Photographers' residence in Sfax, Tunisia.
As we visited the Sfax Medina on the first day of the workshop my immediate thought was how different the atmosphere inside the old city walls is to what I saw thru the bus window when first transiting from the airport to the city center. I decided to take another look outside the Medina walls. I wanted to find a theme that is exclusive to Sfax but at the same time universal.
A bus stop as a subject is universal. What makes the photographs unique is the diversity in the design of the bus stops as well as the people and the landscapes portrayed. Sfax might be famous for the historical Medina but the city’s economy is heavily based on industry and agriculture. My main interest as a photographer of the urban environments is how cities and their inhabitants function in daily life, and how this reflects to the built environment. Photographing the bus stops gave me an opportunity to explore this.
